NY 882758/Habitable/Limited Access On the Left bank of the North Tyne. A fine Tower House of mid C14 with later mansion alongside. This replaced a now vanished late C12 tower. The stone-built tower is 4 storeyed, with a vaulted basement and watch towers at each corner, joined by a parapet walk. The Tower House is assumed to have been built soon after Walter Heron married a de Lisle Heiress in 1348, however the first mention is in 1415 when it was held by Alexander Heron. In the 1950s earthworks were still visible to the south and these may have marked the site of a 12th C de Umfraville stronghold who were then the owners, or perhaps of the de Lisles to whom the manor was granted in the 13C. Sir George Heron, keeper of Tynedale was killed in the borderfight Known as the "Raid of Redesdale" in 1575. The castle allegedly has a ghost, Sir Reginald Fitz-Urse who was starved to death in the prison of the Great Keep.From the tower an underground passage has been traced for some distance to the south its use unknown.
